SAY YES TO SUBTITLES

GRAPHIC DESIGN

I have always loved going to the movies with my family over the years. It’s been a sort of tradition, something we’d often do together. One thing that’s always driven me a bit crazy though, is not catching something someone said in a particular scene of a movie, due to either it being said in a particular accent, speed, or even language. I’m always sat there, frustrated, trying to piece together what was said, or having to ask someone.

I came across this video a few years ago, and it is actually my inspiration behind this piece. https://youtu.be/qXAuws6uuGM

Having subtitles always playing at movie theaters is a way to create an inclusive and accessible environment for everyone. Let me share some compelling reasons why subtitles should be a permanent feature in movie theaters:

First and foremost, subtitles provide equal opportunities for enjoyment and understanding. By having subtitles on screen, all individuals can fully engage with the movie's dialogue and storyline. It allows them to experience the emotions, humor, and nuances of the film, just like any other moviegoer.

Moreover, having permanent subtitles in movie theaters promotes inclusivity and diversity. It sends a powerful message that every individual deserves the chance to enjoy a cinematic experience without any barriers. It breaks down the walls of communication and fosters a sense of belonging for all audiences.

Subtitles also benefit individuals who are non-native English speakers or those who struggle with accents or unfamiliar dialects. They help bridge the language gap and ensure that everyone can follow the dialogue effortlessly. This not only enhances their understanding but also enriches their cultural experience.

Additionally, subtitles can aid in improving literacy skills. By having the text displayed alongside the audio, it provides an opportunity for individuals to reinforce their reading abilities while enjoying a movie. It's an educational tool that seamlessly combines entertainment and learning.

I understand that some individuals may have reservations about subtitles, claiming that they can be distracting from the main action on screen -- I believe that embracing subtitles is a small yet meaningful way to enhance the movie-watching experience for all.
